Air Pollution

While still in the early stages of study, researchers are beginning to investigate the effects of air pollution and smog on the risk of cognitive impairment and an aging population. Specifically, pollution has been shown to have a more pronounced affect in women who carry the APOE-e4 gene.

The aging populace that spends each day breathing in heavily polluted air sees nearly double the potential of developing dementia.23 Translational Psychiatry previewed published findings of a large and lengthy study of American women and the brains of lab mice that had been exposed to pollutants emitted by power plants, motorized vehicles and burning of organic matter to be used as a fuel and biomass wood burning. This 10-year nationwide study monitored women between the ages of 65–79 who possessed the gene variant APOE-e4. The study revealed that women carrying the gene and breathing in heavily polluted air were nearly four times more predisposed to develop “global cognitive decline” than those who breathed in cleaner air. The assessment evaluated loss of memory and reasoning skills leading to dementia.

All areas of study are uncovering that exposure to heightened levels of air pollutants increases the likelihood of dementia, in addition to other cognitive impairments and symptoms of disorientation. Of these, the most notable aspects included amyloid-beta protein clumps and destroyed cells in the hippocampus, which is a key area in the formation of our memory.

What has additionally been established by the geriatric and environment health team at USC is that before new air pollution standards were put in place in 2012, as much as 21 percent of initial cases of accelerated brain decline and dementia were most likely due to air pollution. Their studies also linked pollutants to strokes and heart attacks.24
